I spoke with several people at the last gathering about where to get costumes and patterns for costumes, and thought that this thread should be created as a reference. Mods, can you please leave this thread up for new players?
The site I use the most is DevaLifewear.com, which is a slightly hippie, natural fiber company. I have three Buccaneer Shirts that I bought from them in 1999 (and have worn every year since LARPing) which are just now starting to wear out. They also make loose-fitting pants in all colors that breathe and look completely in-game.
For patterns Both Lindy and I swear by FolkWear.com, which carries patterns of everything from Medieval to traditional Asian clothing.
I buy some of my stuff from eBay, but try to avoid it as the quality can be horrible.

I know it's expensive..
Ren Faires are great places to find garb! I mean they're just full... King Richard's is on right now until October 22nd. There are plenty of other faires but that one's in Carver, MA and easier to get to than say the one in NY which I hear is really wonderful.
Also, craft faires sometimes have nice leather stuff.

Unfortunately, garb can be hideously expensive.....
I love Folkwear patterns, and swear by them (the Cheongsam's that Gracey, Wynter and I wore last event are from their pattern)....I also have a lot of Simplicity and McCalls costuming patterns that I alter to "fit the occasion" so to speak...

Well I know of a site called www.garbtheworld.com many of the prices there are low and though I haven't purchased anything there my self, I know people who have and it's good solid stuff. Nothing amazing mind you, but it's all medival-period and well priced.

There is a store in Cambridge (right next to MIT) called Boston Costume that has a good deal of costumes and also an area with clothes strewn about the floor about 2 feet thick. The costumes aren't horribly priced, and the random area there is $0.75/lb. They also have a good selection of make-up and other accessories.

Gloves!
Even though The Disease is being wiped out, every colonist needs a good pair of gloves.
I love the pair I got from Potted Fox: http://www.pottedfox.com/index.php?main=catalog&action=c ategory&category_id=7
