Sounds great! I'm picking up my kite rod at UPS tonight. Do you have any foam laying around?

Speaking of weapons...

NERF now has an adult sized latex type sword. Has anyone examined this thing and determined if it could be used in our (or any) LARP?

from what I have seen it is MUCH harder foam than is typically used in Larp legal boffers. Even my Camicil is softer (and mine's not the softest thing on the field, I'll admit)

But ultimately that's up to Boz, as our resident boffer safety nazi. What say you herr safety marshal?

actually... funny you should ask... i was at target the other night, and happened upon the sword in question... i can say without hesitation that these swords would not stand up to the abuses of boffer combat, and would leave just as many welts/bruises as a calmacil weapon. I cannot reccomend them for use in this game. Though, as always scott and chris can overrule me.

Katja, I have spare foam if you need it (I'm just out of core!)

As for the NERF swords, those are much better than kids hitting each other with sticks and I'd consider carrying one at a con, but they're not soft enough for boffer use.

Thanks, but James has me covered. I'm heading over to his place to make them tonight! :)

Todd and I were looking at those NERF swords and both agree that we wouldn't want to get hit with them in a LARP.

If the normal mindset of fighting in boffer larps was lightest touch then I'd say yes. But most people wail away, trying to hit fast. I'm not trashing anyone in particular here. Its just the way it goes. I think a combination of adrenelin and tiredness as well as desire to hit fast makes harder hits all around in boffer larps.

If I had spare cash, which I don't, I had considered picking up the longsword to strip and repad it, as I have done with old dead IMF weapons... but I don't know that that's feasible as the core is a question mark.

As long as no one is skinning the wabbits we're good.... ;0>

And while we're on the subject, where does one procure a pistol? (nerf I'm assuming) Does one go to Toys-R-Us and buy one, or does one become McGyver and make it from duct tape and bisquick?

I am planning to wield two weapons as well. I am building a rapier and main gauche'. I am also building them with a basket hilt as well. Definitely a lofty expectation for my first boffers.

Okay, I rarely do anything easy... I like the challenge. When they are complete... I'll post sone pictures of my completed set.

*Chuckle* Bisquick doesn't help.. neither do clams (Ask Cera or Arthur)

No, your best bet is the local Toys-r-wal-tar-mart-get-us, etc. (That's a stuff store much like the fast food store "McBurgerWendyKingDonald's")

I reccomend the NERF products over Buzz Bee's stuff, in most cases. Be careful in NERF though, when buying ammo - for instance, whistler darts don't always feed right in a Maverick.

Gotcha, I'll keep that in mind. Also, how much does nerf ammo run these days? Can you get like, a dumpster full for cheap or do they come in little dinky packages of six for $500? :P

Oh and I'll be sure to ask about those clams.. ;)

Ammo's reasonable - 36 rounds are about $4 if I remember right, for the Streamline (AKA Clip System) darts. Bulk packs up to the hundreds are out there.

All right already!

At this point I will have to see if I can find LARP safe throwing clams..

Ah, yes. I fondly remember the days of eating at K.F.McWendy King's Hut - home of the Whoppin' McDouble Chicken Pizza wrap. It came with a side of Spiral Onion rings and an octuple thick shake (if you dropped it it would crack).

Man, I miss that place! Anxious

As someone who used a polearm exclusively for most of The Isles so far... my one big piece of advice is to have some sort of backup. Either a small firearm of some sort or, ideally, a sword. Polearms are wonderful, but since they're two-handed weapons, all it takes is an NPC to swipe in and maim your arm and you're essentially helpless without a one-handed weapon to defend yourself with until you get patched up. I started carrying a spare longsword during the last few events, and it made a world of difference & saved my life several times!

Yes... that is historically the drawback to the polearm weapon. It's great for keeping people at bay, but to truly be effective, it requires quite a few in formation to make them effective.

That is why many pikesmen were normally outfitted with a dagger or short sword as a back-up weapon. once the close quarters fighting begins, the polearm is all but useless.
