So, I'm going to need a short sword and dagger for the event. Apparently this means I need this and this.
I think I need one piece of kite rod for each, but I have no idea how much padding to get and I have no real idea what to do once I have it. Somehow, I doubt that putting these items in a box with some open cell foam and duct tape and shaking vigerously will result in a usable weapon.
So I guess what I'm saying is:
HEEELP!!!
*ahem*
I mean, would one of you kind folks please assist me?

Don't make me angry, you wouldn't like me when I'm angr...
Wait a second, I think that's that's someone else's tag line.

I have some spare legal foam, bring the kite rod (pre-cut to your specifics) to the event as well as what you want for a grip and we can whip you up a weapon. All I ask for is to cover the cost of the foam.

As plan B, let me know how putting the materials in a box & shaking vigorously works out....

First of all, you should look at the tutorials I've written on building boffers: http://www.arsmagicae.com/howto.html

Secondly, wielding a dagger and a short sword is a BAD idea. Boffer combat is all about speed, so with two short weapons you'll take longer to close, meaning you will take blows EVERY time you TRY to get close enough to land a few. Two shortswords is a somewhat workable style, but you'll still be at a terrible disadvantage against long weapons.

The next comment I am going to make is in no way intended to be sexist. Women are at a disadvantage in combat. We have less muscle mass than men and are not encouraged to be as active. This means the weapons that will likely work best for you are ones that will give you reach and range. This, by the way, is why my character Nara fights with a polearm and a pistol: I compensate for bad wrists and slower reflexes but wielding a weapon with reach and having a ranged attack as a back-up. Polearm is an easier style to learn to fight than dual short. I don't have the materials to make you a polearm, so I recommend you just ask MonsterCamp nicely if you can borrow a weapon for the event.

I know you want to have a cool character and not do what everyone else does, but if you plan on doing any combat, I want you to have fun and not be frustrated that you're losing every fight. Unless you're a marital arts mater, you will loose most battles with a short sword and a dagger.

To corroborate Anakin's statement:

I myself fight with a polearm. I have a fairly slight frame and stand only 5'7 - but the polearm makes a world of difference. You also never need to reload a polearm.

That said... a pistol makes a lovely backup.

If you are determined to fight two weapons, at least make one of them a longsword... and still carry a pistol...

Always keep in mind: these are recommendations. But I have been fighting polearm since my arrival - and it works darn well..

In the same vein, with a shield-partner, a bow can be a devastating weapon in our system.
Two bowmen and three men-at-arms defended a healer from three successive groups of six at one point in our campaign.

Yes, against foes armed with firearms.

However, all that being said I know what Firefox fights with two shortswords and routinely holds her own (if not schooling the unsuspecting NPC's). The trick to fighting with a shorter weapon is to stay mobile and dont let the opponents with longer weapons keep you in one spot.

Thats the key with fighting florentine anyway. Its a mobility based style. Having fought that way for 7 years in Lione Rampant and to some good effect I came to that conclusion. If you stand there and try to duke it out like your a sword and board fighter, unless you are extremely coordinated and good you will loose.

Firearms are awesome, I love them and they help out a primarily non-fighter the best. The extra damage for just a little physical pool is great.

What works for one person might not work for another. I also use a polearm, but came to it after fighting long sword (and losing an awful lot).

Best advice, try something. If it doesn't work for you, then try something else. If you don't want to invest in a given weapon just yet, I'm sure there are plenty of people who have extras you can borrow to try them out.

So be an NPC!
A crunchable NPC!
The folks will be so glad that you're around.
And your arms will be the purplest ones in town.

Purple Arms may be true, but NPCs also get hit in the legs, back, torso...

They get shot, maimed, Agonied, rooted, death struck.....occaisionally skinned and harvested...

What else could they possibly ask for? It's more fun than decent people should be allowed to have!

*yes PCs get most of this as well.... I haven't been skinned yet though
And we're always glad you're around.....we can't exactly harvest our fellow townsfolk, now can we?

Actually, I have as has Noah (Walker the Cannibal).

I don't see why we couldn't, at least, use their bones for stuff.

Well, it wasn't a PC it was an NPC Scalese but, same thing: a 'Person.'

He didn't get anything (neither did I). I think we should have. But the NPCs didn't have any 'H/F SU,' just 'rusty weapons.'

How's this for cold: We plan on using the bones of the Wabbits to build more hutches for future generations. Imagine living in a house that is built out of the bones of your ancestors! LOL. Poor wabbits.
